Why? If you will accept the measurements that steel weighs 495 pounds per cubic foot, that an average mattress occupies about 21 cubic feet and the average weight of the steel in a mattress is 35 pounds -- then dividing 35 pounds by the product of 495 pounds per cubic foot times 21 cubic feet equals 0.34 percent of the volume of a mattress is steel. What this means is that if you load up a truck full of mattresses and haul them off to the scrap steel buyer your transportation bill is 99.66% going to haul "AIR" and who can afford that?
Who are you going to trust - yourself? If so, you need a pair of plyers, safety glasses and the spring out of a retractable pen that no longer works for you. Put on the safety glasses and then open the plyers and place the spring lengthwise between the two faces of the plyers. Now gently begin squeezing the spring until you have it as compressed as possible. Then carefully reverse the process and you should observe that the spring is just as it was before you started. Now, turn the spring sideways between the faces of the plyers and begin to squeeze the spring between the faces of the plyers. If you are strong enough you should observe deformation of the spring beginning to occur as you squeeze the spring from the side. Now when you release the spring from the plyers, the area of the spring that was between the faces of the plyers should not only be deformed but also no longer capable of acting like the original spring did by recovering into its original shape.
